SonySugar Company 2025 Limited Retains Eighty Percent Staff of Former Company Following Redundancy

The management of South Nyanza Sugar Company 2025 Limited has complied with the requirements of the Leasing Transition Committee, and absorbed 80% of the employees of South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited.

The employees of the former company were rendered redundant by the government, following the leasing out of the government-owned sugar companies in the country. The three-month redundancy notice issued by the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr. Kipronoh Rohon, expired on October 31, 2025. On September 29, 2025, the executive chairman of SonySugar Company 2025 Limited, Ali Ahmed Taib, issued a circular requesting all employees to apply for their respective positions.

Managing Director Jane Pamela Odhiambo while addressing the press in her office yesterday, after the successful completion of the exercise, disclosed that 1,239 out of the 1,489 employees who expressed interest in continuing to work under the new management have been absorbed and given new contracts by the lessee, reflecting 80% absorption.

“The payroll was a bit bloated considering the company was a state agency, and the salaries were also higher. But the reduction effected on staff pay has retained 90% of the gross pay, and in future we will add other allowances to motivate the staff.” Said the MD.

She explained that the remaining 250 staff either opted out on their own volition, attained the mandatory retirement age, or lacked the requisite skills in the new establishment. However, the MD said all the staff will be compensated in the form of gratuity, severance, and pensions, by the government.
